Microneedling with radiofrequencies (RF) is an FDA-cleared technology designed to help rejuvenate skin by improving skin tone and texture, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, acne, and scars. The RF Microneedling treatment is minimally invasive and is typically well tolerated with little-to-no downtime. Results can be expected within several weeks, however optimal results typically occur after a series of several RF Microneedling treatments.
Microneedling with RF is a minimally invasive procedure used to painlessly reduce or remove fine lines and wrinkles, loose or sagging skin, scarring on the skin, cellulite, age spots or spots that signal damage from the sun and stretch marks.
Filler in Nasolabial Fold and Microneedling with Peptides
According to the study published in ayalasers and PUBMED “patient satisfaction was high with improvement seen early after the first treatment session, and continued improvement being noted for some months after the final session. No scarring was reported by any participating clinician. All clinicians were extremely satisfied with the safety and efficacy of the INFINI system. In conclusion, the INFINI MFR approach is safe and effective for the treatment of wrinkles in skin type I –V patients.”
Microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) is also used for the treatment of:
- Acne scarring
- Skin tightening
- Skin Lifting
- Collagen production
- Elastin Production
- Neck Tightening
- Stretch Marks
Traditional Microneedling vs. Microneedling with (RF)
Traditional microneedling uses a special device that creates micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s own healing response. Collagen and elastin production are initiated, which effectively tightens skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and acne scarring.
RF microneedling adds the element of radiofrequency energy to the traditional microneedling procedure. The RF energy is delivered via small needles. In addition to the benefits seen with the micro-injury provided by the microneedles, RF microneedling also delivers RF energy deep into the dermis further enhancing skin tightening and scar reduction. The RF energy heats the underlying layers, causing constriction and tightening of the skin, as well as the stimulation of collagen and elastin production. Because the RF energy is delivered so deeply, it can produce faster, more dramatic results. RF microneedling has also shown to be effective in treating post-inflammatory erythema, which is a common result of acne inflammation
What’s all the hype about?
RF Microneedling can be used to improve facial volume, tighten skin in the face and arms, or in combination with other energy devices and injectable treatments to reduce the appearance of scars or address other cosmetic goals. We have been investigating for several years RF-microneedle devices, which penetrate the skin and deliver energy directly to deeper layers. Most devices would either deliver good results but require several days of down time, or be easy on the patient but have underwhelming results. With RF Microneedling, we have been able to develop our own proprietary protocols that can achieve the best of both worlds: excellent results without significant down time.
How does it Work?
Microneedling RF uses “microneedles” to safely deliver fractional radio-frequency (RF) energy to specific locations into the deeper skin layer known as the dermis. This energy promotes the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, and over time the targeted tissue is replaced by healthy, younger-looking skin. The effects of skin tightening can be seen almost immediately. The new collagen production effects are first seen as early as ten to fourteen days and continue up to six months after the treatment – making the skin look brighter, healthier and firmer.
The RF (Radio frequencies) also plays a role—the RF currents from the fine needles damage structures under the surface of the skin without affecting the skin surface itself. This also signals the skin that it should start producing collagen as well as other substances such as hyaluronic acid that result in smoother, stronger and more youthful looking skin. One very important advantage of microneedling with RF is that it can be used on individuals with darker skin tones—other approaches are often limited in these cases.
How Long Does it Take? What is the Recovery Like?
Each treatment takes about 15–20 minutes of active energy delivery, and results gradually appear over the next several months. While each patient’s skin condition is unique, RF Microneedle treatment generally requires a series of treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart to ensure optimal results. The procedure is typically well tolerated, with little discomfort and minimal downtime. The most common side effects are redness and swelling in the treatment area, which generally resolve within a few days.
Every area of skin can be treated—even those areas with delicate skin like the upper eyelids, beneath the eyes, around the nose and around the mouth.
Anyone can benefit from microneedling with RF—both men and women of any age or any skin type or skin tone. According to the study published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology “Microneedling offer a more advantageous safety profile, particularly in the skin-of-color population (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI), compared with more conventional resurfacing modalities”.
Do I Make a good Candidate For Microneedling RF?
Microneedling Radio Frequency effectively treats a variety of skin issues affecting young, middle age and older clients. As a result, typical Microneedling RF clients are men and women of ages from 17 years old to 75 and older. Patients who are 35 to 70 are typically looking for skin tightening and want an improvement on laxity, fine lines and wrinkles. Acne, acne scars and large pores patients are usually 17 to 40 years of age. Another big group of patients are women in their 20-ies to 40-ies that want to get rid of stretch marks and correct pregnancy scars.
Can Microneedling with RF be combined with other procedures?
Microneedling RF treatment is a highly effective skin tightening and laser resurfacing procedure. However, to achieve even better results, Microneedling RF treatment is often successfully combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, Sculptra, Cosmetic Fillers and Botox injections.
Microneedling RF vs. Fractional Laser Resurfacing (fraxel)
Fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing (Fraxel) is a procedure that utilizes infrared light to create micro thermal wounds in targeted tissue. As the skin absorbs the light, tissue is vaporized, leading to the removal of aged and damaged skin cells from the outer layer of the treated area. Both microneedling and Fraxel work by injuring the skin just enough to trigger the body’s natural repair system. They use different mechanisms to create tiny injuries in the skin.
Microneedling RF is the less invasive of the two treatments, and more effective than Fraxel. It works at a very superficial level and does not cause significant discomfort. Fraxel works on deeper levels of the skin, however is significantly more painful and does not provide the benefits of Radiofrequencies.
While non-surgical, Fraxel is more invasive than microneedling rf. Microneedling rf is also well tolerated and virtually painless as opposed to Fraxel which is quite painful.
In addition, patients who have used isotretinoin in the past six months should wait to be treated. Fraxel also not recommended for darker skin types. Microneedling rf can be used for all skin tones and does not have the limitations and contraindications that fraxel has.
